PARAGLIDING PRECISION, UK NATIONALS - UPDATE

The latest news is that the FAI part of this comp. has been nullified. Apparently the fees and forms were never sent to the FAI !!! Also the event was not advertised early enough for the foreign entrants. This means that everyone who got "World Ranking" points....doesn't.  I think the panel might appeal, but the chances are that we will lose our points.

PARAGLIDING PRECISION, UK NATIONALS, AUG 21/22, 2004

The club was host to the UK Nationals last weekend. The competition was based at The Atherfield Bay Holiday Centre, and the flying was all done from the Limerstone/Brighstone launch.  The weather just about held off, and whilst it was sunny, it did get a bit blowy here and there. This led to a variety of entertaining reverse launches! The comp went 2 rounds before being completed at that stage, due to gusty conditions both on launch and at the target.

Thanks go to everyone who chipped-in to help organise the event, and to those who turned up at the weekend to lend a hand. Thanks also to our sponsors at Red Funnel, and to Air Systems, Green Dragons, Butterfly Paragliding and High Adventure who all donated prizes.  Special thanks to Steve who managed to get permission for us to bottom land Brighstone. Without this, we could've had serious problems finding a suitable hill.  There were 38 competitors, and Winner of the comp was Chris Haynes from Beyond Extreme with a score of 0.08m (8cm to you and me). Andy Shaw came 2nd with 0.12m.  Top local team was Butterfly Paragliding !

As far as the locals go, the unofficial positions are

On Saturday evening we had a BBQ at Atherfield, followed by music from Evolution. Nice.

Paul Escott produced a great event Tee-shirt, and there are spares at £5 each, so if you want one, let a committee member know!

Everyone up to, and including, Laurie will get FAI points, so we have done a totally unofficial set of standings that show where you stand TODAY. This will change if you blink because there are lots of comps going on this Summer that haven't been added yet, but it's a bit of a giggle to see where you might be...Click Here , but if you want the official standings see below...

Presentation on flying in South Africa

Last Wednesday, we were treated to a presentation by Barry and Candice Pedersen who run "Birdmen" in South Africa. Once again, the turnout was poor, but the content was great.  They gave a fantastic show and talk about flying the Cape Town area.  Well worth a look www.birdmen.co.za

"Maintenance Evening" at Atherfield, 5th May

The maintenance evening went well for the handful of members who took the opportunity to come along and check their wings in the dry.  It was a shame that only a few of you turned out, because the new owners opened the bar especially for us.  Paddy brought along a porosity meter, so we took turns to check our wings.  Quite a lot of variation in porosity.  The highest figure was recorded for a fairly new wing at over 400 seconds, whereas the 'Tea-Bag' prize goes to the owner of a Swing Arcus at 1 second !!!

The prize for the biggest object goes to Francis....

Pilot killed on the Island

Recently a visiting pilot, Vin Di Franco, was killed whilst flying on the cliffs.  Vin was well known by many of the Island pilots as he trained on the Isle of Wight.  The accident is under investigation by the BHPA and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

New "Stuff for Sale" Link

We've added a link to a site where you can flog your old kit. Go to the LINKS section.

New Flying Site

We have a new coastal site next to the IW Pearl at Brighstone.  This is a more challenging site than Atherfield, but still an excellent alternative. Many thanks to the Landowners at Grange Farm, and to Trevor and Dave's hard work in securing this site.  IW Pearl -Click here

Try the New McDaddy Tandems !!!

Yes! They are here! We have two McDaddy's courtesy of "Awards for All" and Ozone Paragliders, and many more...
If you're a qualified Tandem pilot, get yourself registered with the club and get others flying. Contact Steve Goodier to see how you can get involved and help through 'Challenge and Adventure'.

Many thanks go to so many people, but specifically Steve and Graham for their hard work getting this gear.
